There will not be a Bulletin next week as I will be away. Included herein are details of the two CATI’s for the 28 Feb and 7 March. Note that these are two separate events in the same location and with the same format, on separate Saturdays.

Course setters and Helpers Thank you to Richard, Ben and Don for offering to organise and set the Newcomers weekend. Ben and Don are new course setters, we look forward to there event. Also Nigel and Craig have offered to set the Vic Champs, thanks Boys.

We still need Course setters and Organisers for our Bush series, please check the Calendar Earliest event needing help, is the Last Weekend in March, will be upon us soon, so please consider

Membership. Would everyone please ensure that they renew their membership before the start of the Bush Classic season (Saturday 14 March, Diamond Hill North– details in the Bulletin of 11 March). This will make it easier on the event organisers and on your pocket (cheaper entry fee!).

Star(s). I hope everyone caught up with the great feature in the Addie on Friday 20 February. Raelee gave us a really good write up with great pictures of Lachlan Feuerherdt – and of course, his Dad. Lachlan won both the Sprint and Middle Distance races in the Oceania Championships in Tasmania last month. Oh yes, and his Dad took out second in the middle and long distance and third in the sprint. Well done to both!

Newcomer’s Events: Saturday 28 February and Saturday 7 March. 2015

Both days are starting from the same area and at the same times.

The primary purpose of these events is for introducing newcomers to bush orienteering.

Two courses will be available for beginners to try, also with an additional small “model map area” set up for map feature familiarisation.

Start times available anytime between 9:00am to 1:00pm. Courses close at 2:00pm.

Directions: From Bendigo turn right at the main traffic lights in Kangaroo Flat and travel 5km out the Maryborough Rd toward Lockwood. Look for orienteering signs on the right after the sweeping right-hand bend.

What to bring: Sturdy footwear for running or walking in the forest off track. Water, hat, sunscreen, and a couple of friends!

Note: Map, compass and timing device supplied – newcomers FREE ENTRY

Bendigo Orienteers club members will be available to assist newcomers as required.

Pre-Season Training Options:

Running in parallel with the newcomer’s event, several options will be available for juniors and experienced orienteers to get in some pre-season training.

Training exercises will be an enjoyable challenge for even the most experienced navigators. You may also like to design your own course/activity from the available controls.

1) Keyhole exercise with short, medium, and long distance variants (moderate to hard challenge).

2) Corridor course, medium and long variants (moderate/hard challenge).

3) Use an all controls map and run as a 1/hr. scatter O score event.

4) You can also design your own course to your preferred length, selecting from any of the controls available.

Note: Start times as above, $5:00

Public transport available to Kangaroo Flat train station, travel from station to start area approx. 6km, pick-up and drop-off arrangements also available.

Calendar for 2015 (repeat).

Our program for 2015 is now finalised and we are in the process of obtaining permits. This means we can’t change the location/map but we can still change the event format. You can open and add your name from the following link 2015 Calendar and if you want to run an event with a different format, please email Colin Walker.

NOTE: We still don’t have any organizers for the CATI’s on Sat 28 February and Sat. 7 March. If we don’t have anyone by Friday 20 Feb., both will have to be cancelled.

We also need a Course Setter for the Vic Champs on the 26th April at One Tree Hill.

Plan A didn’t work, now Plan B has gone the same way. Plan Z is that I will set them, but as I set the Ultralong last year, I dont want to be greedy and do it all

BendiGo ToDay (from Don Cherry)

A big thanks to Jim for organising and running the Bendigo Today double over the weekend. Every one appeared to enjoy the navigation challenges and the return to Bush orienteering for the year. We welcomed some new members and those returning for the 2015 season.
Fifty eight competitors sprinted around Gateway Park at Kangaroo Flat in humid conditions on Saturday evening negotiating streetscapes, park lands and the Bendigo creek. The beautiful bush setting on Sunday morning at Crusoe Reservoir had a return crowd of about 46 from the night before, with the addition of many who just came for the longer distance Hagaby swelling the numbers to 69. Navigation on the longer course played havoc with a few who posted longer than expected times.
Overall winners in A- Bryan Keely (BG), Simon Uppill (OH) and David Brownridge (BG). B course – Chris Norwood (EU), Jimmy Cameron (BG) and Asha Steer (DR). C course – Henry Cameron, Solomon Cameron and Karina Cherry, all from Bendigo. Well done to all. A longer analysis will appear on the club web page soon.

One Tree Hill and Beyond. Bendigo Orienteers didn’t just fall out of the sky! We are the strongest and most active Bush Orienteering club in Victoria – probably Australia, and we got there through the hard work and dedication of a lot of people. The club came into being in February 1977. Several members, still competing and working for the club were at the formation meeting in the old Town Hall building. Since then we have seen many milestones, probably the highlight being the hosting of the World Orienteering Championships – the first time outside Europe, on Mt Kooyoora near Inglewood. If you find that you are committed to our club, and orienteering, ask to purchase a copy of ‘One Tree Hill and Beyond’ a history of Bendigo Orienteers Inc., thoroughly researched and beautifully written by Charles Brownridge. Copies should be available at the O Trailer, cost $20.00. It is well worth the read!

Come and Try Orienteering: events with courses specially designed for people who haven’t yet tried our sport or want to get back to it after a long absence. But, to date we do not have any people to organize either of these events, so:

Most of will have been made aware of the passing of Eureka’ Tom Norwood. The following notice is in today’s VOA Bulletin:

Vale Tom Norwood

Tom was a founding member of Eureka orienteers and an ex-president of the VOA. He was the main organiser for several major events and carnivals in Victoria over a long period of time. He won his age class in the Victorian Orienteer of the Year for many years and he continued to compete at orienteering events up until 2 years ago, demonstrating his lasting passion for the sport that will be missed by many. Tom passed away peacefully on Monday the 9th of February. He was aged 85. On behalf of the orienteering Victoria community I would like to extend my thoughts and best wishes to Tom’s family at this time.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 2pm at FWBarnes, corner of Latrobe and Pleasant streets in Ballarat. All are welcome to celebrate Tom’s life. Details of Tom’s funeral and a link to an online condolence book, are up on the Eureka website

We at Bendigo Orienteers Inc also have Tom in our thoughts; he was a wonderful asset to his club and to orienteering in Victoria in general. He was a great friend going back many years to many of us in our club and a wonderful character in his own right. Our thoughts are with Tom’s family at this sad time.

Club membership: For 2015, Bendigo club membership be set at $40 per adult and $2 per student/junior for 2015. This fee includes the VOA fee and Bendigo fee. If members want the OA magazine this gets ordered separately on Eventor. Membership is paid through eventor. There is NO family membership.

Event entry fees for 2015:

Club member: adult $8, Junior/student $4.

Non-members: adult $15, Junior/student $5.

SI tick hire: $5 (members can buy a SI stick or Card).

Newcomers attending their first event will get free entry; after this they will be offered a $20 voucher which gives them 3 more entries. SI hire is included in this”.

2015 Bendi-Go “Getting into Autumn” To-Day

Saturday, 14thFebruary

Format: Saturday: Sprint.

Course A: 3.4 k, hard.

Course B: 2.5 k, hard.

Course C: 2.0 k, moderate.

Map: Gateway Park – Kangaroo Flat. Scale: 1:4,000, 5m contours

Start times: 6.30pm-7.00pm, 1 min start interval

You chose your own start time, turn up and go anytime between 6.30 and 7.00

Courses close 7.30pm.

Directions for Day 1: From Bendigo: From the centre of Bendigo travel south along High Street towards Kangaroo Flat. After the traffic lights at the Oak Street/Hattam Street intersection continue for about 1.7 kms and turn right into Browning Street and the Gateway Park.

From Castlemaine: Travel on the Calder H’way to Kangaroo Flat. Continue for approx. 600 metres from the Lockwood Rd. traffic lights and turn left into Browning Street and the Gateway Park.

Sunday15th.February.

Format: Hagaby*. (see note)

Course A, 10.4 k, 2 maps, (65min) hard.

Course B, 6.3 k, 2 maps, (45min) hard.

Course C, 4.2 k, 1 map, (30min) moderate.

Map: Upper Crusoe. Scale: 1:10,000, 5m contours.

Start time: 8.00am, mass start.

Courses close 10.00am .

*Note: Butterfly orienteering format (also known as Hagaby format): A course can typically be broken into six segments from which three loops are constructed. Competitors are mass-started and shall complete all segments but in different sequences. Map exchanges are made as necessary. Each control on a competitor’s course shall be visited in a prescribed order. The competitor who takes the shortest time to complete the course wins. A simplified format where a course is broken into four segments from which two loops are constructed is allowed for smaller numbers of competitors.

Directions for Day 2: From Bendigo: from the centre of Bendigo travel south along High Street to Kangaroo Flat. Approx. 600 metres on from the Lockwood Rd. traffic lights turn left into Crusoe Road. Continue along Crusoe Road and look for the start just past Crusoe Reservoir.

From Castlemaine: Travel towards Kangaroo Flat on the Calder. Approx. 600 metres past the Lansell shopping Centre traffic lights turn left into Crusoe Road, then as for Bendigo.

Chicken and Champagne. A superb morning for running in the bush, a bit cool at times but otherwise perfect! We had about 38 starters front up and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves – lots of JSquad people, well done for getting up early. The course of thirty controls was set by Chris Creely who had just finished remapping the area. It was really great to see Darren Eenjes back out in the bush after a long absence – there’s a whisper around that he’s still in the ‘walking’ stage of his comeback as yet – how long he can put up with this will become evident in time! I noticed some of the Cherry family at our event also but when I picked up the local daily on Tuesday I found photos of Katina and her Mum prominent in one of the gallery pages at another event.

The AGM was held after everyone had a bit of Fowl and Fizz and resulted in:

Secretary: Terry Davidson (there will be a separate minutes secretary)
Treasurer: Andrew Wallace
Vice President: Jim Russell (this is for 1 year only, new VP needed next year)

A motion was passed allowing the executive to co-opt committee members as required.

I would like to congratulate Jim and the outgoing members of the Executive for their work for the club over the past few years, and wish them well in their orienteering in the future. We are the best orienteering club in Victoria (in my modest view) – Australia for that matter. If you are a member be aware that Bendigo Orienteers is your club and the Executive need you to put forward any thoughts you may have that will help us prosper even more.
